We chose Not 9 to 5 as our name to reflect the untraditional hours of our industry and the all-consuming nature of mental health and substance use challenges. Neither are confined to the hours of “9 to 5.” 

 

Our organization was born from a conversation between two friends bonding over our lived experience with mental health and addiction. Working in this industry for over a decade, we’ve lived different versions of the same story. Hassel Aviles (event producer, hospitality consultant and entrepreneur) and Ariel Coplan (executive chef, Distrikt 461 and owner, Grand Cru Deli) are committed to planting seeds of change in the hospitality industry for the next generation.
